A silk scarf is a beautiful accessory for both men and women. While only the most fashionable of men choose to don this look, many women are embracing adding a long silk scarf to everyday outfits. These elegant fabrics are very delicate and must be cared for in the right manner to avoid them being destroyed. A silk scarf can add vibrant color to any ensemble or quietly blend in as a must have accessory.
1. Keep your silk scarf way from direct sun. Silk is a very delicate fabric which can fade quickly when exposed to sunlight for long periods of time. It is best to keep your silk scarves in a dresser drawer or hanging in a close where it will be protected from the elements. When storing your garment, be sure not to fold it as silk will easily crease. Creases can be difficult to get out of fabric as well. Roll your silk scarves to prevent creasing and be sure to rotate their location if they are being store for long periods of time so that they can “breathe.”
2. Avoid heat and chemicals. High heat from an iron, clothes dryer or even intense sunlight can cause silk to fade, deteriorate and become ruined. The price tag on many silk scarves is expensive which is why it is important to not subject it to the heat. Additionally strong chemicals that are found in cheap perfumes and many detergents will also ruin a silk scarf. It is best to have your silk scarf dry cleaned if it become dirty.
3. Avoid moisture as much as possible. Silk fibers will stretch and become heavily damaged if they are exposed to dampness for long periods of time. This means that if you handwash your scarf, it is best to tumble dry on delicate and low to prevent the fabric from deteriorating. If you need to iron your scarf, it should be done while the silk is damp and by using a low heat setting. High heat will burn through silk quickly and ultimately ruin the scarf.
An easy way to store your silk scarves in the home is to assemble shower rings on a hanger and loop each silk scarf through a ring. This will allow them room to breathe and keep them safe from the elements, creasing and children. A well maintained silk scarf can be an accessory that is passed down through the generations. Considering the beauty of these items, it is essential that they are cared for properly in order for them to last a long time. Many men and women find that caring for a silk scarf can be done at home easily if you take proper precautions. Silk scarves should be dry cleaned at least once per year, more if they are worn regularly. A silk scarf can be worn on the head or around the neck and there are dozens of different tying styles to choose form.
